Lookout Mountain had temporarily lost their small market for the little items that you’d forget to pick up at the main grocery store. It will be back on August 18th,2011 under new ownership. The new owners – Lex and Sissy Tarumianz, Greg and Zane Brown, Huxley and Rhonda Brown, and Ewing and Kim Lupton – have combined their love for their community, their delight in Deep South cuisine, their creative flair for fun, and their exciting dreams to create a market that Lex promises “will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen.”
The owners of the new market speak of it this way; “We have a wonderful mixture of people that live around us on Lookout Mountain, TN & GA, so we wanted a place you can get a fresh tomato, a frozen casserole to take home for dinner, a hot meal for an elderly person, and after-school candy along with the normal things people need – fresh bread, milk, beer, Coca-Cola products, ice – and … well, just about anything people want.
“Actually it is fun knowing that a roofer can get a Gatorade and a sandwich while the next person in line can buy enough fresh chicken salad for her church group,” Lex said. “Our initial thrust will be the expanded deli items. We’ve expanded the menu from everything to a ham biscuit to a very good take-home dinner. And I assure you everything will be prepared fresh each day.”
The Market, which will be open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. seven days a week, will be managed by the dynamic Allison Wright, while Rhetta Yates, a well-known gourmet cook who is also from the mountain, will lead the kitchen staff.
The accompanying liquor store, Spirits on the Mountain, will also open this Thursday and will operate between the hours of noon and 8 p.m. Hugh Davis, who managed the store under the last owner, will be back and said the store will offer a greater selection, especially in the wine department.
“We’ve found that prepared food is now bigger than ever before,” Lex explained. “We’ll have sandwiches you can order, a different soup each day and fountain drinks, but what else is popular are rotisserie items, grab-and-go foods and staples,” he said.
“Our specialty items include all types of things from gourmet salad dressings to craft beers to items I don’t think you can’t buy anywhere else in Chattanooga,” he added, cautioning the owners have never been in the grocery or deli business “so there is still a lot to learn.”
“We know there is a tremendous need for a market on Lookout Mountain and, in the early going, we are eager to keep fresh produce, offer daily specials, and a varying menu that will be driven by a consistent high quality the customers will appreciate.”
“The closer we come to our opening the more excited we are,” he said. “We want to do some fun things in the near future, like whole pies and cakes.”
